What moves the price

Nothing here is a trick question, and knowing why each one matters makes the answers easier:

• Quantity. The single biggest lever, and the one that decides whether a job runs digital or offset. Ask for two or three quantities on one quote — the price per piece falls as the run grows, and the break is often not where people expect.
• Finished size. Sizes that nest efficiently on a press sheet cost less than sizes that leave half the sheet as waste. If the size is flexible, say so.
• Colors. Full process color, or one or two specific inks? Offset here runs one to five colors, and a two-color job on a two-color press is a different price from the same art in four-color process.
• Stock. Coated or uncoated, text weight or cover, white or a shade. If you do not know, describe the piece and we will suggest something.
• Folding and binding. A flat sheet, a letter fold, a saddle-stitched booklet and a coil-bound manual are four different jobs after the press.
• Mailing. If it mails, say so before it is designed — the postal requirements affect the size, the fold and where the address can sit.
• The date. Not a rush surcharge fishing expedition. Some jobs simply have to be scheduled around a press, and it is better to know now.
