What being close actually buys you is the parts that want a person in the room: standing over a press sheet, reading a hard-copy proof under your own light, or collecting a rush job yourself instead of waiting on a carrier. That is worth something on some jobs and nothing at all on others.
Mailing changes the geography again. A direct mail job is addressed, wafer sealed, presorted and dropped from here, and the postal service takes it the rest of the way. Where your customers are matters to the mailing list; it does not much matter to the printing. See direct mail.
